On today's post, I'd like to introduce you to Sara Hathaway, an author friend from California. Her book, DAY AFTER DISASTER, is a fascinating and thought-provoking read. In this post, Sara created an interview with one of the characters in her novel. Read and enjoy!
Day After Disaster is an apocalyptic, adventure novel. The story follows a dynamic young
woman, wife and mother as she battles against Mother Nature to return to her family after the world has been turned upside down. She does not know if her family is even alive to return home to but her survival instincts drive her along he desperate journey. Along the road, she rescues an eight-year-old girl named Star.
The following is an interview with Star after she and Erika make it to a town called Cool:
Hello little girl and what is your name?
Do you remember your full name?
Star…Star…no. I can’t remember. I can’t ‘member my last name. My head hurts and I’m so tired.
I know but you can’t fall asleep yet okay? Do you remember your father’s name?
Yeah his name was daddy but he didn’t come out of the house once the shaking began. He was watching TV while mommy and I were in the garden. The house fell down. Mommy screamed and ran to find him but she said he was gone. Mommy and I left there.
Do you remember where you lived?
Sure we lived in Auburn. My daddy worked at the grocery store and mommy and I used to walk there to take him lunch. We had to walk all the way down two streets but it was okay because we got to pass Mrs. McHannon’s house and she had the most prettiest flowers in the whole world. They smelled so yummy as we passed by. In our back yard we had a big swimming pool. I always swam in it all summer. My daddy would sometimes yell at me and say I was going to turn into a prune. But I didn’t care, I really like prunes and I like swimming even more.
All right, now open your eyes and follow my pencil. You have very pretty blue eyes, Star.
My mommy used to say that.
What do you mean your mommy used to say that, isn’t your mommy the one who brought you here?
No, Erika brought me here. If her family is still alive they live by here. Erika saved me from the bad man. Erika is strong and she protected me…my mommy couldn’t
Where is your mommy now Star?
My mom is dead! She’s dead and the bad man killed her!
Who killer her?
The bad man. Mommy and I were hiding from the bad men but one day a man came. He grabbed my mommy. Mommy told me to run so I ran and hid in the bushes. He couldn’t find me but I saw him attack my mommy.
I could hardly see my mommy when he was hitting her on the ground but I knew that man was hurting her. I could here her screaming. Then Erika came and I saw the man go flying off my mommy.
What happened to the man?
I killed him! I saw what he did to my mommy! I hate him! I ran out with my knife my mommy gave me and I stabbed it in his heart.
It’s okay Star, calm down.
It’s not okay! My daddy died and now my mommy’s dead too! I would be with those bad men if Erika hadn’t taken me away. Now we are here to find her family and we don’t even know if they’re alive. I love Erika and I want her to find her husband and her son but…
But what Star?
But I’m kinda jealous. If they are alive her son will have both his parents and I lost both mine. I want them back or at least one. Why does his mom get to come home to him and I’ll never see mine again. And if Erika finds her family she may not want me anymore.
I know Erika will always protect you and love you. Do you think you will be okay with her as your mother?
Maybe…yes. She’s like an aunt I never knew. I just feel like…like I know her already but she’s different from my mommy. My mom was soft and pretty smelling. Erika is tough and rugged. Erika is quiet and reserved but my mom was bubbly and social. I will always miss my mommy but mommy said to stay with Erika and that’s what I’m going to do.
Star, you can rest now. Things will be better in the morning.
