Ah, Procrastination - who among us has not at one time or other been guilty of it? You know, all those times that you turned to less urgent tasks rather than the ones that really needed your attention; or you chose to do something pleasurable or comfortable while putting of that which was more challenging. And remember the stress of having to finally rush to meet that “last minute” deadline, kicking yourself for creating that stress in the first place? Uh- huh! Been there - done that! How about you?
Are you the 'avoider' that just can't get around to it? Other distractions are more enticing?
Or the 'spin artist' that is constantly busy but you're not getting anywhere?
Maybe you're the 'perfectionist'? If you think you can't do it perfectly in the time you have, you do nothing at all while you wait for the 'perfect' time which never comes.
Or the 'dreamer'? You fantasize about writing that letter or painting that bedroom. You can see the finished product in your mind but that's as far as it ever gets. It's easier to dream than do.
Or the 'starter'? All kinds of started projects pile up around your home but nothing is ever finished.
How about the 'complicator'? When faced with a task that's either distasteful or scares you, you create all kinds of hurdles to rationalize not doing it.
Or the 'panic producer'? You consistently leave everything to the last minute and then operate in total panic as the clock ticks towards a deadline.
Then there's the 'prioritizer' - now she's proud of her organizational skills but the problem is she'll spend hours making lists but never completing a thing that's on the list!
Counselors often say that motivation produces action or behavior. In fact, I think it's the other way around. Taking action leads to increasing motivation.
So - is there an easy way to overcome procrastination? No....and Yes.
Embrace the value of TIME - we all have our allotment. Don't waste it. It's a gift we receive enabling us to fulfill the destiny for which we were born.
